Constant Internet developments and heavy usage of social media such as Facebook, Twitter, and WeChat have shifted the traditional teaching and learning from a physical learning world to an e-learning environment. Since 2008, Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) emerged to provide electronic access to eLearning courses globally. From the original MOOC and a couple of thousand students in 2008 (Klobas, Macintosh, & Murphy, 2014), by the end of 2016 over 58 million learners had signed up for MOOCs and over 700 universities offered 6,850 MOOCs.

In recent years, MOOCs have evolved and grown exponentially as an education alternative and innovative method of online learning. Leading universities in the world have been developing MOOCs for both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. As a result of MOOCs’ development, students from all over the world can take courses offered by leading universities at any time and at their own pace without coming to the classroom. All these developments have revolutionary implications for the university admission policy, student development strategies, staff and resource reallocation, and ongoing quality assurance.

Facing this educational evolution, the conference also provides an e-education track, welcoming abstracts related to, but not limited to, the following topics:

Purpose– This paper aims to reflect on issues concerning online and social media recruitment in hospitality organisations. It considers the implications for employers and prospective employees, discussing areas of mutual relevance.

Design/methodology/approach – The paper draws on existing research to examine the subject of online and social media recruitment. Secondary sources are used to provide a framework for the consideration of online and social media recruitment for hospitality organisations. A model for understanding online- and social media-empowered hospitality recruitment is proposed.
Findings– Considerations for employers include website attributes, issues of fairness in the recruitments process and brand reputation. For prospective employees, the considerations centre on public and private online profiles. Considerations common to both include the value of an online presence, the blurring of boundaries in online information and legal implications.

Research limitations/implications – This is a discussion paper drawing on evidence from previous research to explore recruitment issues in the hospitality industry. It raises the profile of recruitment issues, mapping the field and providing the basis for further exploration.

Practical implications– The paper provides a basis for understanding the impact of online and social media recruitment trends and issues and considers the implications for hospitality employers and prospective employees.

Originality/value– The paper’s contribution is its reflection on debates from different disciplines and in offering the dual perspective of employers and potential employees from which to consider emerging themes as they relate to online- and social media-empowered recruitment.

Dr Anya Chapman celebrates 200 years of the British Seaside Pier

Dr Anya Chapman recently presented a paper entitled ‘Celebrating 200 years of the British Seaside Pier’ at the ‘Beside the Seaside’ conference in Scarborough.

The conference was hosted by the Seaside Heritage Network, which Anya is a founding member of.  In her presentation, Anya looked at the historic development of British seaside pleasure piers, from their beginnings as humble landing stages, through to the ‘golden age’ of pier building. However, she highlighted that over the last 40 years some of the most iconic piers have been lost, and the situation is increasingly challenging for those that remain. Anya then went on to showcase four seaside piers (Bournemouth, Hastings, Penarth and Folkestone) which have recently rejuvenated and repositioned to become seaside heritage assets that are embracing the future.

Prof. Dimitrios Buhalis is Head of Department Tourism and Hospitality, Director of the eTourism Lab and Deputy Director of the International Centre for Tourism and Hospitality Research at Bournemouth University in England. He is a Strategic Management and Marketing expert with specialisation in Information Communication Technology applications in the Tourism, Travel, Hospitality and Leisure industries. His research area is cutting across a number of disciplines and is looking into adoption of innovations for creating value for both consumers and organisations. His current research focus includes Smart Tourism, SoCoMo Marketing (Social media Context and Mobile Marketing), Augmented Reality, Experience management and Personalisation, Reputation and Social Media Strategies, Accessible and Special Diet (Alergens) Tourism. Close collaboration with industry, governments and international organisations from around the world ensures that results have relevance and impact in the real world whilst constantly pushing the boundaries of knowledge and academic excellence. Dimitrios is also the immediate past President of the International Federation for Information Technologies in Travel and Tourism.

Smart tourism emerges as a concept that enables destinations to build their competitiveness based on the interoperability of systems and co-creation of tourism products between all stakeholders. This is based on emergent smart cities and smart living developments and take city principles to urban or rural areas and not only consider residents but also tourists in their efforts to support mobility, resource availability and allocation, sustainability and quality of life/visits. Dr Susanna Curtin was invited to Meiji University, Tokyo Japan as a visiting scholar

Dr Susanna Curtin was invited to Meiji University, Tokyo Japan as a visiting scholar

 

Between the 7th and the 17th April 2017, Dr Susanna Curtin was invited to Meiji University in Japan as a visiting scholar.  Here she was the keynote speaker at Wildlife Tourism Symposium organised by Associate Professor Tom Jones of Meiji University and APU. Her keynote was entitled ‘The Call of the Wild: Opportunities, Practices and Dilemmas of Wildlife Tourism’.  She also held a workshop for the Masters’ students where she discussed tourism and the commodification of wildlife.

 

Whilst in Japan, she visited a number of nature and wildlife attractions.  Her travels took her up Mt Takao and to Kyushu, the most southwestern of Japan’s main islands. Kyushu is known for its subtropical climate, its active volcanoes, beaches and its natural hot springs such as those at Beppu where she stayed.

 

The focus of the scholarship, apart from the keynote and the classes, was to develop a new project with her Japanese colleagues to study the sustainable management of food provisioned wildlife attractions such as Japanese monkey parks.  In Japan, Japanese macaques, also known as ‘snow monkeys’ are fed several times a day which attract the monkeys down from the mountains so that visitors can watch them.  Although this is a popular, and no doubt lucrative tourist attraction, food provisioning can cause several problems such as over-population of monkeys, increased inter-group and in-group aggression and habituation to humans.

 

One of their colleagues, Haruko Masuo, has 15 years’ experience as a government-licenced tour guide and works at the world-famous Jigokudani Wild snow monkey park, near Yamanouchi in the Nagano region.  Here she has found that tourist numbers have increased mostly due to international tourists who visit the park. Whilst there is a historical acceptance of food provisioning for the monkeys in Japan, some international tourists feel that it renders their wildlife experience as inauthentic and unethical.  Moreover, there are an increasing number of aggressive monkeys who target tourists and their picnics.  Susanna’s, Tom’s and Haruko’s project, and subsequent papers, will explore tourist experiences and management policies to challenge this type of attraction and suggest a more sustainable approach to wildlife park management.

Destination eWOM: A macro and meso network approach?

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to develop a framework that describes the characteristics and the underlying drivers of publically shared electronic word-of-mouth (eWOM) for destinations. Tweets about a destination were collected while the destination hosted a hallmark event over a 5-year period (2011–2015). In each year, interactions on Twitter were analysed using macro and meso-level social network analysis to identify the network structure and hubs of eWOM activity. A K means clustering algorithm was then applied to create clusters of nodes with similar characteristics and eWOM content within each cluster was analysed using automated content analysis. The resulting model indicates that destination and event eWOM maintains a macro network structure in which a small number of accounts or hubs influence information sharing. Hub characteristics evolve over time, whereas eWOM content can fluctuate in response to emergent destination activities.
