Asynchronous Video Interview Assessments in Brightspace

Dr. Anya Chapman, Principal Academic in Tourism Management, recently collaborated with FLIE to create an asynchronous video interview (AVI) assignment using the quiz tool in Brightspace. With AVIs increasingly used in recruitment, this assessment aimed to test students’ understanding while preparing them for real-world interviews.

Lacking specialised AVI software, Rob Walter (BUBS Learning Technologist) developed a proof of concept using Brightspace’s video note function.  Rob used ChatGPT to generate example questions based on the mock job description/person spec Dr Chapman had developed for the assignment, along with unit learning outcomes and a few other details from the coursework brief.

After seeing the proof of concept, Dr. Chapman created her own question sets, recording pools of video note questions within the quiz tool. Students practiced with example quizzes and two mock interviews before completing the final assessment.

To deter AI-generated responses, students were warned they’d lose marks for generic, scripted answers. Marks were given for each answer, but feedback was provided holistically, and marking took approximately 15 minutes per student.

Dr. Chapman shared: “Amazingly, a few students emailed me after the assessment to say how useful it was!”

Student feedback included:

“I really enjoyed this assignment—it was extremely valuable.”

“Thank you for your support and quick feedback; it made a real difference.”

“I appreciate all the effort you put into teaching and supporting us.”
