The Centre for Excellence in Learning (CEL) has launched its fourth Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) Teaching Awards, which highlight the great things you’re doing to inspire our students to learn and think about the world around them and how they can make a difference.
ESD Teaching Award 2019
Climate change is rarely out of the headlines. At last year’s Katowice Climate Change Conference, 15 year old Swedish student Greta Thunberg made an impassioned plea to world leaders to step up to the mark and deliver climate justice for her generation and those to come.
Listen to what Greta had to say and consider how you could use – or are already using – such information to educate your students about the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
You can then apply for the ESD Teaching Awards by 29 March and be in with a chance of winning £75 worth of goods to donate to a local charity. We want to know how the material you teach is directly related to sustainable development and how successful the teaching was. We want to know what didn’t work too!
The following questions could be considered for subjects in all our faculties and could help when applying for the ESD Awards:
- What are the health implications of climate change?
- What are the economic costs and social justice issues of not tackling climate change?
- How is climate change covered in the popular press?
- What are the anticipated impacts of climate change on the environment?
NUS also have a number of online resources to help you start thinking about the SDGs and how you can include these within your course to help shape your teaching.

ESD and BU2025
We have embedded sustainability in BU2025 and the strategy requires, ‘all academic departments align their programmes with the challenges facing society and the world and all our departments, professional services and cross-BU align co-curricular and extra-curricular opportunities with those challenges’.
The UN Sustainable Development Goals underpinned the development of the strategy and provide a road map for tackling the grand challenges facing society.
