11th annual Mike Warne Lecture at BU – 1 Mar 17

The 11th annual Mike Warne Lecture sponsored by the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) and organised by students from the BA (Hons) Marketing Communications programme was held on 1st March 2017 in the Fusion building.

MikeWarneThis year’s theme was Immersive Technology – The Future of Marketing, introduced by Chris Daly – Chief Executive of CIM, with speakers Dean Johnson, Head of Innovation at Brandwidth, Cathy White – Director of CEW Communications and GeekGirl Meetup UK and Mike Mallia from insurance company LV.

While focusing on augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) in a marketing context, it was interesting to hear how LV are looking at the potential of VR to increase customer empathy for call handlers by letting them ‘virtually’ experience scenario’s that customers may have suffered.

It was also interesting to note that, while each presentation was in content and style distinct from the others, they all basically carried the same broad message.

  1. Justify the method and how it will be accessed.
  2. Create something very good.
  3. Engaging and effective marketing

To complement the theme, CEL were in attendance to demonstrate augmented reality via the Zappar and Aurasma apps, as well as virtual reality with the Google Cardboard and the Oculus Rift, giving attendees, students, staff and local marketing professionals, the opportunity to experience first-hand the power of these emerging technologies.

If you would like to know more about augmented or virtual reality, contact the CEL team.
