MOOCs – an introduction

A MOOC (Massive Open Online Courses) is a model for delivering online learning material to anyone who wants to sign up for the course. Usually, there is no limit on the number of people who can sign up for a MOOC.  Figures suggest that 25 million people have signed up for MOOCs in the last 3 years.  Enrolment in 2015 was double that in 2014.  One study of MOOCs from 2014 found the average enrolment to be 43,000.  While many people sign up for MOOCs, another study found the completion rate to be around 6%.

Some institutions use MOOCs to make their content available to a much wider audience for free or at a fee while others use a MOOC to give potential students a taste of the courses 0n offer at University.  M&S have partnered with the University of Leeds to produce a business MOOC.

Here is an article from HBR entitled Who’s benefiting from MOOCs, and why?
