Next NRG talk: ‘Literary Tourism’ – Dr Philip Long (Weds 7 May)

Our next NRG session will take place on Wednesday 7 May (4pm, PG141) where Dr Philip Long (School of Tourism) will deliver a talk entitled:

Literary Tourism: ‘The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page’ (St. Augustine)
Weds 7 May, 4pm, PG141

This presentation covers a range of connections between tourism and literature across genres, including but not limited to travel writing. Issues addressed include places featured in fictional texts, travel writing as genre and tourism that involves: following the route taken by a fictional character; visiting particular locations/settings from a story; exploring the haunts of a novelist; visiting the birthplace / home / grave of an author; and literary trails, tours, and festivals.

Dr Philip Long is Head of the Tourism Academic Group at Bournemouth University. His previous academic posts were at Leeds Metropolitan and Sheffield Hallam Universities. His current research interests and publications include work on: festivals, cultural events and their tourism dimensions; connections between international film, television and tourism; diaspora communities, social exclusion and tourism; partnerships and collaboration in tourism development and the relationships between royalty and tourism. Philip maintains long-standing links with the tourism, festivals and cultural sectors through his board membership of the Tourism Society (UK); International Festivals and Events Association (Europe) and, Tourism Management Institute.
