The National Teaching Fellowship Scheme (NTFS) celebrates and recognises individuals who have made an outstanding impact on student outcomes and the teaching profession in higher education.
The NTFS is open to all Higher Education Providers (HEPs) across the four nations of the UK, including Further Education Colleges and independent ‘alternative’ providers. Each UK HEP is invited to nominate up to three individual members of staff who can clearly demonstrate having an outstanding impact on student outcomes and the teaching profession. In order to participate in the NTFS, institutions must be Advance HE Full or Affiliate members and based in the UK; participation in the scheme is a benefit of membership, i.e. no additional fee is due for participation. In selecting up to three individuals to put forward for the scheme, institutions are strongly encouraged to reflect the full diversity of their staff body. 50 awards are made annually, so it is a very competitive process.
Bournemouth University have three current NTFs – Dr Mel Hughes (NTF 2020) Professor Sue Way (NTF 2018) Professor Debbie Holley (NTF 2014) , who sits on the National Association for National Teaching Fellowships Committee, and runs the national development workshops. We are keen at BU to celebrate and recognise our fabulous educators. FLIE are leading the process, through Dr Geli Roushan; and our three NTFs, with Anne Quinney from FLIE ran the first of two workshops last week to offer staff the opportunity to find out about the scheme and its requirements. AdvanceHe (previously the Higher Education Academy) run accreditations for Associate Fellow, Fellow, Senior Fellow and Principle Fellowship, and BU, PGCert which offers Fellowship as an outcome of that qualification, and we have an internal accreditation process up to Senior Fellow called TeachBU through FLIE.
