Jisc Attendance capture – recording Notified absences

Each Jisc attendance register has a set of attendance statuses that can be set for students per session.

For attendance at timetabled unit sessions,
you only need to use the Attended and Not attended statuses.

Authorised absences

Authorised absences are not recorded on Jisc – they are recorded on the Engage App by Programme Support Staff. Authorised absences should simply be recorded as ‘Not attended’ on Jisc (there is no need to update to the ‘Notified absence’ status). This is because we need to see clearly in the data just whether the student has attended or not: the process provides other ways in which reasons for low attendance are logged and followed-up on.

If a student gives you reasons for an absence and these could impact their attendance for a week or more, or you’re concerned they could impact the student’s overall engagement significantly, please pass this information onto the Programme Support Officer: they can log it on Engage so that it can be considered as part of the Engagement Review process. We are not logging reasons for single absences which won’t impact on their attendance over a longer period, so please do not pass single absence information to the PSOs – this would create more work for them without contributing to the engagement review process. (NB the exception to this is FHSS professional programmes where single absences do need to be logged).
