Learning about autism through immersive VR

HSS Faculty Learning Technologist Jakob Rossner recently filmed and produced a 360 experience with colleagues within the Nursing department. The short film, designed to be experienced using a VR headset, was created to demonstrate the experience of a a young person with autism in a hospital environment. The aim was for student nurses to gain a better understanding of what Autism Spectrum Condition is and how to support individuals with ASC. 3 students wearing VR headsets

Dr Bernice Law worked with teams across Nursing to create this opportunity for 225 students to experience how a hospital visit can be experienced through the eyes of a person living with autism. FLIE colleagues supported on the day to ensure all students had an opportunity to experience the film in VR.

The video focuses on a 17 year old female, Anna, who is sent to hospital following contact with her GP. It shows her journey through the hospital environment and the impact this can have on an individual with ASC, resulting in two different endings showing both good and poor practice. The internal monologue was created by an individual with ASC so that students can understand how someone with ASC may be thinking and feeling, providing a first-hand experience.
