The JISC LA platform has been redesigned to provide a more modern user interface and improved functionality and usability for attendance capture and monitoring. Many of these improvements have been the result of our staff feedback via surveys and enquiries which have been collated during the last two years.
Summary of platform highlights
- Checkin codes available in advance
All timetabled teaching sessions for curricular units will be created on the platform automatically which means you no longer have to create a register to take attendance and also means the Checkin codes will be available on the platform for each register for up to 2 weeks in the future. - Improved access to registers
The new ‘Events’ screen lists the registers for the units that you are teaching for the current day (by default) and allows you to view previous and future registers. You’ll no longer need to find the unit first to get to the register. If a register is missed it will remain on the platform and can be updated at any time. - Registers automatically open at start time and close at the end time
On the current platform registers closed one hour after being opened. On the new platform they automatically open at the start of the session and close at the end. It’s up to you at what point you wish to share the code. - Easier to share codes with students
Each register provides the option to display the check-in code in large numbers on the screen. So it should just be a click to open a register and a click to share the code and students can check in. - Improved flexibility for students checking in
If a student joins a session that they aren’t timetabled to attend, they can still check-in but will be flagged on the register as ‘unexpected’. This helps accommodate any late adjustments to timetabling that would previously not allow students to check in if they are not yet scheduled in the timetable. - Improved views for student attendance and VLE activity
Student activity metrics for attendance and VLE activity can be viewed by ‘students on a unit’ and ‘students on a programme level’. The platform will show the attendance rate and VLE activity status for each student. Previously the system would only show an overall ‘RAG status’ per student. - New web app for students
A new web app will be provided for students to check in which also shows them a ‘check-in’ history and upcoming sessions for the next 10 days.
When will the new platform be available?
The new system will released on Monday 9th September and made available on a new web link. Attendance data from academic year 23/24 will be imported shortly after. Further details along with training and guidance will be made available on the JISC LA summer upgrade page in the Brightspace Staff Resources. Staff involved in teaching activity during the release of the new platform have already been contacted to ensure they are supported during the transition.
