School of Tourism’s Alexandra Correia is awarded her PhD

Last week, part time PhD student Alexandra Correia had her Viva Voce for her PhD titled “An examination of inter-business cooperation by wine and tourism small and medium-sized businesses in the Douro Valley of Portugal”. Alexandra was awarded her PhD subject to a few minor changes.

Alexandra commented on the experience:

The completion of the PhD represents the fulfilment of a very much awaited goal. Writing the thesis was simultaneously a challenging journey and a greatly rewarding learning process.

Having the opportunity to be supervised by such a good supervision team (Professor Roger Vaughan, Professor Alan Fyall and Dr Philip Alford) made this an unforgettable and enriching experience.

Alexandra continued “The final step – the Viva Voce, as part of the all experience, was equally gratifying.   In the end, having achieved the PhD makes me to look back and be 100% sure that this journey and all the associated efforts were worthwhile.

Congratulations from everyone in the School of Tourism to Alexandra on this incredible achievement!

MSc Tourism Management Graduate Launches first book Arctic Reflections

©ChristyHehir2013

We have previously bought you news about Christy Hehir, an MSc Tourism Management graduate who has written a book based on her PhD research in the Arctic.

On January 28th the book, Arctic Reflections; a Moment of Inspiration, a Lifetime of Action was officially launched at the Museum of Natural Sciences in Brussels.

Christy and Luka Tomac joined forces to create a moving and insightful book capturing the experiences of their Arctic journey. Through personal testimonies collected by Christy as part of her PhD research into how travel can act as a stimulus to influence lasting environmental behaviour, and photographs taken by Luka Tomac of the sights witnessed, this book goes beyond simple impressions and acts as a poignant reminder that our planet is at great environmental risk. Importantly, it also offers positive examples of young people taking action through their work with electric vehicles, satellite earth observations, youth engagement, the use of law in addressing climate change… and hopes to inspire the reader to join participants’ projects or indeed start their own.

During her speech at the launch Christy summarised her Arctic Action Plan into three words; knowledge, engagement and responsibility and questioned the celebration of the billionth international passenger in 2012 versus a growing conscience that calls for the reduction in our everyday carbon emissions.  She concluded, “It is urgent that we agree on an appropriate course of action together.”

Now launched, the book will be distributed to European Members of Parliament and key influences, plus there are plans for photography exhibitions in Zagreb, London and Oslo.

Congratulations to Christy for this great achievement.

Bournemouth University School of Tourism host their first virtual lecture with Montclair State University, USA

Today Bournemouth University hosted a virtual interactive lecture with Montclair State University in the USA.

Both cohorts were given the lecture by Dr Heather Hartwell titled “Believe it or not hungry in hospital, eat well in prison” that focused on food service in hospitals and prisons.

Both cohorts were able to see and interact with each other throughout the lecture and were given the opportunity to ask questions and debate the topic at the end of the lecture.

This is the first time that Bournemouth University has hosted a virtual interactive lecture and is certainly something that we hope to repeat in the future as both sets of students seemed to gain a lot from the experience.

School of Tourism showcases its CPD Programme at the Hotel and Catering Show 2013

In March, the School of Tourism will be exhibiting at the Hotel and Catering show being held at the BIC on the 5th – 6th March, to showcase its  CPD (Continuing Professional Development) programme.

Keith Hayman, BU’s Head of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) in the School of Tourism, outlines how the course works:

“Everything about our CPD programme for employers is flexible, from course content to delivery times. Working closely with Hall & Woodhouse, the Dorset-based brewing and pub company ,we came up with a bespoke programme of 6 units delivered over eighteen months. The units include HE Study Skills; Hospitality Context; Services Marketing; People and Performance; E-Marketing and Financial Reporting. The first cohort received its CHE (Certificate of Higher Education) in 2012 and will progress to a Foundation Degree in Business and Hospitality Management in 2013” explains Keith.

Anthony Woodhouse , MD Hall & Woodhouse, shares his experience of working with the School of Tourism CPD Programme:

“From our perspective, the central pillar to H & W’s long term strategy is that we have to be a great place to work. It’s very simple. Learning and development sits at the very heart of that,”

“One of the additional benefits of the CPD programme is group cohesion. As a company we understand no-one can know everything about the business. Having our team, drawn from all parts of the business on this course means that when they come across a challenge, they have a peer group to help them find the solution.”
