As a Multimedia Journalism student, I was required to attend an interview at Bournemouth University. This may sound daunting but in actual fact it was refreshingly relaxed, it simply gives you another opportunity to visit the campus, speak to students and meet lecturers.

The day consisted of a tour of the media facilities by a current student followed by a meeting with two of the lecturers in one of the computer suites. This enabled them to talk to each one of us individually. Whilst I waited for the lecturer to come round to me, they asked us to write an article about well, essentially anything. Don’t worry about this part, they basically want to see your writing style.

There is no dress code and you are not required to prepare anything but if you do have any previous material, such as blog posts or articles you may have written, bring them along with you, it adds an extra “je ne sais quoi” about you. If however, like me, you forget these things in a sheer panic whilst at the hotel, don’t worry you can just mention the things you have done when asked. There is no chance of it jeopardising your application.

Despite wanting to portray myself as this cool and collected journo type, the nerves got the better of me and I kept my mouth shut for the entire tour round campus. A piece of advice, don’t be afraid to be yourself and ask questions. This is essentially your time to outshine the competition, so speak up if you have something to say because, given the chance, someone else might steal the limelight from you.

Don’t see the process as being something you should worry about, not all courses ask for interviews but I know that after mine, I knew Bournemouth was the choice for me and maybe you will too.
