As an international student studying MSc in Management with Business Analytics at Bournemouth University in the UK, I vividly remember my first year of university. It was a rollercoaster of emotions, from excitement and anticipation to homesickness and uncertainty. In this blog post, I want to share my story and provide you with a detailed overview of what to expect in your first year of university, from making friends to studying and living away from home.

Making Friends

One of the most exciting aspects of starting university is the opportunity to meet new people and make friends. However, it can also be daunting, particularly if you’re an international student who’s never been to the UK before. My advice is to be open-minded and put yourself out there. Attend social events and join clubs or societies that interest you. Don’t be afraid to strike up a conversation with someone in your class or in the dorms. Making friends takes time, but it’s worth the effort.

Living Away From Home

Living away from home for the first time can be a challenging experience, particularly if you’re an international student who’s used to a different culture and way of life. I remember feeling homesick and missing my family and friends back home. However, living away from home also offers a lot of opportunities for personal growth and independence. My advice is to stay in touch with your loved ones back home but also make an effort to explore your new surroundings and embrace new experiences.

Studying

Studying at university is very different from studying in high school or college. The pace is faster, the workload is heavier, and the expectations are higher. My advice is to stay on top of your coursework from the beginning and don’t be afraid to ask for help if you need it. Attend lectures and seminars, take good notes, and participate in class discussions. Create a study schedule and stick to it, but also make sure to take breaks and prioritize your mental health.

Cultural Differences

As an international student, you may encounter cultural differences that you’re not used to. It’s important to be respectful and open-minded towards other cultures and customs. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and seek out resources to help you adjust. Bournemouth University offers a range of support services for international students, from language classes to cultural events.

Homesickness

Homesickness is a common experience for many first-year students, particularly if you’re studying in a different country. My advice is to stay in touch with your loved ones back home but also make an effort to build a support network at university. Join clubs or societies that interest you, attend social events, and reach out to other students who may be feeling homesick as well.

In conclusion, your first year of university is a unique and challenging experience, particularly if you’re an international student. It’s a time of growth, learning, and self-discovery. By being open-minded, proactive, and resilient, you’ll be well on your way to thriving at university and making the most of your academic experience at Bournemouth University.
