KEYNOTES
1pm 4th October, EB206 Sarah Jones (MES Hong Kong Pre-Keynote): Towards the Unknown: Building literacy in a world we don’t understand (via video link / interactive). Sarah is the Head of the Birmingham School of Media at Birmingham City University. Her practice and research sits within emerging technologies and the development of immersive experiential films. Previously, Sarah was Deputy Head of Media and Performing Arts at Coventry University and Journalism Programme Leader at University of Salford. Sarah created the Global News Relay where a team broadcasted around the world for twelve hours collaborating with other institutions in the US, India, Australia, Malaysia, Norway. Sarah is an Apple Distinguished. Her approach is based on mobile global collaborative learning. Funded research projects within education have used virtual reality for experiential learning in areas such as media and healthcare. Her research is focused on immersive realities (VR/AR), experiential film within 360 immersive storytelling. Sarah is also working on a Google Digital News Initiative project, in collaboration with the Coventry Telegraph, building a VR game around the Blitz. Sarah is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and previously served on the on the board of the Association of Journalism Educators. She is a Trustee of the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust and holds external roles at Northampton, Leeds Trinity and an examiner for the NCTJ. Previously, she worked for ITV as a correspondent and news anchor. Sarah has won awards for her reporting. In 2007, she spent a year on secondment to New York for GMTV following Presidential candidates on the campaign trail.
415pm 4th October, EB206 Roman Gerodimos: Fusion on Film: Combining Research, Education and Creative Media Practice. Dr Roman Gerodimos is Principal Academic in Global Current Affairs at Bournemouth University and a senior faculty member at the Salzburg Academy on Media & Global Change. His work focuses on the challenges facing democracy, global security and engagement with the Other, and the role of digital media in facilitating these. He is the co-editor of The Media, Political Participation and Empowerment (Routledge 2013) and The Politics of Extreme Austerity: Greece in the Eurozone Crisis (Palgrave 2015). Roman has written, directed and produced three experimental short films: At the Edge of the Present (2015), A Certain Type of Freedom (2015) and Essence (2018). His recently published research focuses on participatory photography as a tool of urban voice and on civic mobilisation on Instagram. He regularly appears in the media as an expert on global current affairs and was recently interviewed by David Aaronovitch on BBC Radio 4.
12pm 5th October, EB306 Isabella Rega: Digital Activism and Marginal Voices. Dr Isabella Rega holds a Ph.D. in Communication Sciences and an Executive Master degree in Intercultural Communication from the Università della Svizzera Italiana (USI). Her PhD dissertation dealt with the role of telecentres in socio-economic development. She is currently Principal Lecturer in Digital Literacies and Education at CEMP – Centre of Excellence in Media Practice and member of the Civic Media Hub at Bournemouth University. Formerly, she worked as Post-Doc researcher at the London Knowledge Lab, Institute of Education, University of London, working on a project about mobile learning for Community Health Workers in Kenya (mCHW). Before moving to UK, Isabella was the executive director of the NewMinE Lab at USI and of the CROSS-FIELD Pro*Doc and has been involved as project manager in several ICT4D projects, focusing on eLearning and access issues, in South Africa, Brazil and Mozambique. She co-founded Associazione seed, a non-profit organization promoting the use of educational technologies in the non-profit sector.
2pm 5th October, EB206 Jon Wardle: Paying Attention: A Close Study of Teenager Interaction & Engagement with Digital Media. Dr Jon Wardle is Director of the National Film and Television School. Prior to joining the NFTS in early 2012, Jon was Director of the Centre for Excellence in Media Practice at Bournemouth University, the only HEFCE Centre for Excellence for teaching and learning in the media area in the UK. Jon was NFTS Deputy Director & Director of Curriculum & Registrar from 2012 -2017. He was responsible for all educational matters at the NFTS including curriculum development, quality assurance, education enhancement and registry. Jon was appointed Director of the School in August 2017. Since joining the NFTS Jon has developed a number of new courses working in partnership with organisations including Sky, Channel 4, Discovery Networks International, the BBC and Aardman. Jon leads the annual BFI Film Academy, a ‘talent campus’ for 66 of the most talented 16-19 year old filmmakers in the UK. Jon is the author of a number of papers and book chapters on media education as well as co-editor of th book ‘Current Perspectives in Media Education’. Jon is on the editorial board of the Media Education Research Journal, is an executive officer of the Media Education Association and Nahemi, is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and the National Association of Television Production Executives (NATPE), an associate member of BAFTA and an advisor on education to the Royal Television Society. He has a BA (Hons) in Television Production from Bournemouth University, an MBA from the University of Southampton and a Doctorate of Education from the University of Bristol.
