AI, Data Protection and Information Security

The rapid pace of AI advancements requires that the university remains updated with evolving technologies and potential disruptions in the field, while navigating the developing ethical and regulatory landscape. Ensuring compliance with ethical standards, privacy regulations, intellectual property, and emerging AI-related legislation presents challenges and potential legal risks.

For now, the simplest approach is to avoid using any systems or services not provided by or through BU IT-Services.
These systems and services have undergone appropriate governance checks to ensure ethical and regulatory compliance.

If you are exploring AI solutions out of curiosity or to become familiar with them, you must adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Under no circumstances, enter student submitted work in whole or part.
  • Do not enter information that includes personal data (data that could identify individuals).
  • Avoid entering BU information that might be deemed sensitive, confidential, or restricted.

Further information will be provided as the sector and the general landscape continue to develop. Meanwhile, please visit this page for further information.  If you have any specific questions or concerns regarding data protection, please contact the Data Protection Officer (dpo@bournemouth.ac.uk).  For specific questions or concerns regarding security, please contact the information security team (infosec@bournemouth.ac.uk).
