Running successful hybrid sessions

When running Hybrid meetings you need to be aware of creating an inclusive experience for those attending both online and in the room. For example, ensuring that:

  • everyone has the opportunity to contribute throughout the meeting (not just at the end)
  • any presentations or equipment used in the room are visible for those online (slides should be presented via Teams/Zoom)
  • any side conversations in the room are avoided
  • someone in the room is allocated to monitor the chat.

Try out the Meeting Owl 360

The Meeting Owl is an easy-to-use, plug in and play device for use in a hybrid teaching or meeting environment. It’s a 360-degree camera, microphone and speaker all-in-one.

The Owl can be positioned in the centre of your meeting space and will capture all the people in the room on video and on microphone, wherever they are in the room. It automatically zooms in on the speaker and even follows them around with its voice and motion activated sensors. So for remote participants, it provides an inclusive experience where they can clearly see and hear who is talking at any time.

Further help and guidance

If you have a hybrid teaching session with students, or hybrid meetings involving staff, a reminder there is guidance available to you in the Brightspace Staff Resources area on Hybrid teaching, including recommended microphones and cameras, and top tips.

If you would like to try out the Owl, you can arrange a demonstration with your Faculty Learning Technologist or request to borrow one from the IT Service Desk.

The meeting owl is fantastic! We are using it for the Certificate in Programme Leadership for those that can’t attend the in-person sessions and we have been able to have great discussions in the room and virtually enabled by the owl as it always picks up the speaker.
