Teaching Excellence Framework – Deans Summit
On 27 September our first Deans’ Summit was held in London. Delegates discussed what is currently known about discipline level TEF, what the TEF narrative might look like and what the challenges associated with providing data at course level might involve.
HEA Student Surveys
HEA student surveys are important tools for understanding how students experience their higher education courses, such as how engaged they feel by the teaching and how supported they are in their learning and development. In 2016-17, we’re running all three student surveys.

PTES and UKES: Surveys and Webinars
National results from both PTES and UKES will be released over the coming weeks. Our free lunchtime research webinars offer the opportunity to come together to discuss the results and debate critical issues in HE learning and teaching. In on our forthcoming PTES and United Kingdom Engagement Survey (UKES) webinars, Jason Leman (HEA Surveys Officer) and Jonathan Neves (Head of Surveys at the HEA) will discuss the results from the 2016 PTES and UKES surveys on 17 October and 7 November respectively. Executive Development Programme 2017
Closing date for applications 31 October 2016
Bookings are now open for our Executive Development Programme, starting in April 2017. This yearlong programme is aimed at leaders of learning, teaching and the student academic experience who wish to enhance their leadership capacity and consolidate their understanding of the dynamic higher education landscape. In a recent HEA blog. Jonathan Eaton, Head of Learning and Teaching Enhancement at Teesside University talks about how the programme raised his confidence professionally and extended his knowledge of the wider HE policy landscape, while Professor Helen O’Sullivan of the University of Liverpool explains how the programme has benefitted her professionally in many ways. HEA STEM Conference, February 2017
Call for papers closing date – 7 October 2016
The HEA STEM Conference 2017 will be taking place in Manchester on 1 February 2017. The theme ‘Achieving Excellence in STEM Teaching and Learning’ focuses on those aspects of pedagogic practice within STEM subjects that support, nurture and improve; engagement with students, the learning environment and graduate success. For those who would like to be part of the Conference, the Call for Papers closes at the end of the week on Friday 7 October. In a recent blog Carey Freeman from University of South Wales talks about her experiences as a first time presenter last year’s STEM conference, she has followed this with another blog about how presenting has affected her over the last seven months.
HEA Annual Conference, July 2017 Call for papers closes 31 October 2016
Our Annual Conference is returning in 2017 after a break of three years. Generation TEF: Teaching in the spotlight, takes place 4-6 July 2017 at the University of Manchester. The new format for the Annual Conference includes a day dedicated to addressing sector priorities, such as retention, assessment and employability, with two days either side of discipline-led activities where the sharing of teaching methods and ideas across disciplines will feature significantly. HEA Annual Subscriber Survey
We are about to send out an Annual Subscriber Survey to gather information on your thoughts and priorities for the coming year. The survey will provide an opportunity to help shape the HEA’s ongoing strategy and support of teaching and learning in higher education. We will use the results of the survey to review our current activity, strategic planning and future product development.
