CEL workshop on TEL for SciTech

A few days ago, we held a technology enhanced learning (TEL) workshop for one of the departments in SciTech.  The 2 hour session was run by CEL and the focus was on a number of tools that could be used in teaching in learning, a subset of 4 being chosen from the soon to be released TEL Toolkit.

The session was well attended with 20 academics present.  In the initial discussion about how TEL could assist, the topic of engagement came out as being key.

The session covered the use of Peerwise, Mentimeter, Facebook and Twitter.  The department have long been users and have a matured approach to Facebook and Twitter so we spent most of our time looking at how student created and answered multiple choice questions (Peerwise) and how in-class student responses using their smart phones (Mentimeter) can aid engagement.  Both these applications were well received and there has been action after the session to further investigate their application to units in SciTech.

We finished the session by talking about how staff can engage with CEL both to advance their own development and also to pass on their skills and experience to others in their department and also the wider University.

I was a very enjoyable session and I would like to thank those gave up their time to attend.  It was great to work with such an engaged and knowledgeable audience too.

CEL are happy to run this or other sessions on TEL and other topics within teaching and learning so please contact us if we can help you.  If you have a requirement, come and talk to us and we will see how what assistance we can provide.
