Moving to a new country for studies is always an exciting adventure, and finding the right accommodation can significantly impact your overall experience. Since arriving in the UK, I’ve lived in both university accommodations like Lyme Regis House and private accommodation at Host Student in Bournemouth. Each has its unique set of pros and cons, especially regarding the deposit process.

University Accommodation: Lyme Regis House

Deposit Process: The deposit process at Lyme Regis House was straightforward and well-organised. As part of the university’s housing system, everything was clearly outlined from the start. The deposit amount was reasonable and clearly communicated, with detailed information on what it covered and the conditions for its return.

Pros:

  1. Ease of Payment: The deposit payment could be made online through the university’s portal, which was convenient and secure. The rent could be paid in Installments or whole at once according to your preference. The bus pass was included in my rent, which made my life much easier.
  1. Transparency: The university provided a comprehensive list of potential deductions, helping me understand how to maintain the accommodation to ensure a full refund.
  1. Support: The accommodation office was always available to answer questions or concerns about the deposit process, providing peace of mind.

Cons:

  1. Fixed Terms: University accommodations often have fixed lease terms that might not suit everyone’s needs.
  1. Less Amenities: Lyme Regis had less amenities as compared to Host. They had a common room, but not a gym and a study space.
  1. Less Flexibility: There’s less flexibility in terms of room personalization and making changes to the living space compared to private accommodations.

Private Accommodation: Host Students

Deposit Process: The deposit process for Host Student accommodation was slightly more complex compared to university accommodation. The private landlord required a more detailed inventory check and a deposit amount. Additionally, there was more paperwork involved.

Pros:

  1. Flexibility: Private accommodations often offer more flexible lease terms and the ability to personalize your space.
  1. Privacy: Generally, private accommodations provide more privacy and a quieter living environment.
  1. Amenities: Host Student offered a range of amenities such as a gym, common areas, and events that catered to students, enhancing the overall living experience.

Cons:

  1. Higher Rent: The rent amount was higher than university accommodation, which might be a strain for some students.
  1. Complex Process: The deposit process involved more detailed paperwork, including a comprehensive check at move-in and move-out.
  1. Risk of Disputes: There’s a higher chance of disputes over deposit returns, especially if there are disagreements about the condition of the property at the end of the lease.

Which One is My Favourite?

Choosing a favourite depends on what you value most in your living situation. For me, Lyme Regis House stands out due to its straightforward deposit process, transparency, and the support system provided by the university. It made my initial transition to living in the UK smoother and more stress-free.

However, Host Student on 17a Christchurch Road offers more flexibility and amenities that cater to a more independent lifestyle. If you value having more control over your living space and enjoy additional facilities, private accommodation might be the better choice.

Conclusion

Both types of accommodation have their advantages and drawbacks. Your choice will depend on your personal preferences, financial situation, and what you prioritise in your living experience. For a seamless and supportive environment, university accommodation like Lyme Regis House is ideal. If you seek more independence and amenities, private accommodation such as Host Student on 17a Christchurch Road is worth considering.
