For Olivia Cassar, choosing Bournemouth University (BU) was about finding a place where she could feel at home while pursuing a rewarding healthcare career. After attending an open day while at college, she was immediately impressed by the welcoming atmosphere, the organisation of the university, and the passion shown by the academic staff. Combined with Bournemouth’s vibrant town and beautiful coastal setting, BU felt like the ideal place to spend the next chapter of her life. When exploring Occupational Therapy courses, Olivia was particularly inspired by the lecturers she met, whose enthusiasm for teaching gave her confidence that she would be supported throughout her studies.

Graduating in 2026 with a BSc (Hons) in Occupational Therapy, Olivia looks back on her university experience as one filled with growth, practical learning and valuable opportunities. The placement elements of the course were especially impactful, allowing her to see first-hand the difference Occupational Therapists make in people’s lives. Through placements in a variety of settings, she gained a broad understanding of the profession and discovered the areas that interested her most. She also appreciated BU’s supportive learning environment, where student feedback was actively encouraged and used to shape teaching. Practical sessions, collaborative projects and group activities helped bring learning to life and prepared students for professional practice.

Following graduation, Olivia sought to broaden her understanding of healthcare on a global scale. She completed a three-week Occupational Therapy placement in Iloilo, Philippines, where she observed therapy programmes in government hospitals, physiotherapy services in private clinics, and even surgical procedures in operating theatres. The experience provided a unique insight into how healthcare systems differ around the world and how resources are prioritised to support patient care. It also reinforced the importance of adaptability, compassion and creativity in healthcare practice.

Inspired by her experiences and passion for supporting young people, Olivia began her career as a Band 5 Paediatric Occupational Therapist with HCRG Care Group. Working within children’s services, she supports children with health and educational needs across community settings, including homes, schools and clinics. She values the variety the role offers and is excited to continue developing her skills while making a meaningful difference to children and their families.

What Olivia finds most rewarding is seeing children progress towards their goals and gain greater independence in everyday activities. She also values being part of a supportive team of Occupational Therapists and therapy assistants who work together to achieve the best outcomes for patients.

Her advice to future Occupational Therapy students is to gain hands-on experience wherever possible. Shadowing an Occupational Therapist and undertaking healthcare or support work can provide valuable insight into the profession. Above all, Olivia encourages aspiring therapists to believe in themselves, embrace challenges and remember that compassion, patience and determination are key to success.
