ESET, a global leader in digital security, continues its commitment to supporting the next generation of cyber security professionals through its £5,000 plus hardware package Women in Cyber Security Studentship. This year’s recipient Lorraine, a first-year BU student passionate about protecting digital frontiers, has shared how the scholarship is helping her shape her future in the industry.
Having originally studied computer science, Lorraine found her calling in cyber security, a field she described as “more focused and purpose driven.” Inspired by the opportunity to make a difference and explore the societal impact of tech, she now aspires to work for an international cyber security firm or even join the police force.
“Cyber security stood out because it’s not just about tech, it’s about understanding businesses, protecting people and being part of something evolving every day,” she said. “I want to travel and work globally and cyber security gives me that chance.”
The ESET Women in Cyber Security Studentship has helped Lorraine access critical equipment including a new laptop and monitor, textbooks and additional online certification courses, investments that are already enhancing her CV as she prepares for her second year placement. “It’s been a real boost, not just financially, but in confidence too.”
She’s also embraced leadership as a student representative, advocating for her classmates and participating in regular student-staff forums. “It’s helped me grow professionally. I’m developing skills that go beyond the classroom; networking, communication, leadership.”
As part of ESET’s broader initiative to diversify the tech sector, she’s already taken part in networking events and is eager to support future scholarship recipients as a mentor. “It’s so important to see women in this field. It makes a real difference. I’d absolutely recommend this scholarship to anyone considering it, it opens doors.”
The scholarship also forms part of ESET’s local partnerships, including its work with the Bournemouth women’s football team, reinforcing its commitment to supporting women in traditionally male-dominated industries.
“We’re proud to back young women with ambition and drive,” said Matt Knell, Country Manager. “This scholarship is about more than just funding, it’s about building a future where cyber security is inclusive, innovative and accessible.”
