I am Bruna Tolomeli from Brazil studying a master’s in Post Production Editing here at BU since September 2017. Coming from a different country, I was not used to the concept of joining clubs and societies. I found it extremely interesting and decided to do some research about it. Even before coming to Bournemouth, I already had a massive list of clubs and societies that I wanted to be part of. I would like to share with you how I chose a club to join and the benefits I am having from it.
Choose wisely
Once I arrived in Bournemouth, I went to the student fair where there were stalls for all the clubs and societies with information about each one. This was useful as it helped me prioritize. Working on a master’s programme requires a lot of individual study time apart from the lectures. I understood that I should choose wisely on which club I would like to join so I would not overload myself.
I chose the Yoga Club because it helps me treat my body and soul simultaneously as a whole. Not only does it keep my energies balanced, but it helps keep my body in shape. We meet once a week to practice yoga and sometimes to meditate. Whenever we are able, there are retreats and extra activities to participate in.
Broaden your social circle
Being a part of a club allows you to meet new people that are not necessarily from your course but who share the same interests as you. Clubs and societies typically have weekly meetings to practice the activity that they enjoy but also promote socials events at pubs and clubs to have drinks and socialise. Not only can you bond more with your mates at these events, but you will also have the chance to get to know friends of other friends, thereby broadening your relationships.
Replenish your energy
Studies can drain a lot of energy from students. It is crucial to find an activity that enables you to clear your mind away from studies for a few hours. This will give you extra energy to go back to your coursework even stronger! Even if your studies are not that hard, it is always wonderful to spend some time doing something you enjoy with people you feel at ease with.
Experience student life
Joining a club or a society will allow you to experience student life on a deeper level, making you feel even more a part of the BU community. I strongly recommend you join the ones that you identify yourself with or even try something new that you have never done before. You might surprise yourself and discover new talents!
