I am Tsz Kam Yeung from Hong Kong and this is my sixth year at Bournemouth University. I graduated from BU with a BA (Hons) Business Studies with Marketing degree in 2016 and I am currently a MSc Events Marketing student. Before I started my course this year, many people asked me why I wanted to go back to Bournemouth for another year. It is very simple – Bournemouth gives me a feeling of ‘home’. I know who I can find and talk to when I feel sad or have any issues and it’s easy to make friends here.
Don’t let language be your barrier
I received a lot of support from the Faculty of Management including language support. I believe the biggest issue with most international students is the language barrier. The language support at BU is fantastic and they help with our assignments such as referencing and checking grammatical issues. My writing skills have greatly improved since I got support from them.
Placements can lead to permanent job offers
BU offers a placement year for most undergraduate courses and the career team helps students build a professional CV and provide interview training. I am pleased that I had the placement year as I gained a lot of experience that I could not get from lectures. I had the opportunity to build a network of people in the business world and improve my interpersonal skills. Because of that, I received a job offer from my placement company right after my graduation, while others who had not done work placement were still struggling to find a job.
Support after graduation
The support from BU doesn’t just stop when you graduate. They still look after us even when we go back to our home country, through, for example, the alumni community. The Regional Manager would come to visit us making the continuing relationship more than just university and student. It’s more like an old friend coming to see you across the world. The way BU treats their alumni is one of the reasons that I chose to come back for Postgraduate study – because they really care about us.
Beautiful Bournemouth
Bournemouth is one of the most beautiful coastal resorts in the UK. They have a stunning beach which is my favourite place. Hong Kong is a small city and we do not have a beach like this. I really enjoy my time at the beach, no matter if I’m alone or with friends. All the stress and pressure disappears after you walk alongside the seafront. There are many shops in the town centre where you can get whatever you need. If you love to party, the Old Fire Station is a great place for you as it is the night club run by SUBU (Student Union of Bournemouth University). It has different themes during the week and is the perfect place to hang out with friends – day or night.
Post-Graduation exploration
Four years undergraduate study at Bournemouth University is not enough. If you can, stay another year to explore this incredible city. I am sure you will be in love with this place.
