January – the month famous for making resolutions to eat better and get fit. But exercise is for life, not just for January, so read on…

Rowing2Bournemouth University’s Sports Department (sportBU) offers fantastic facilities for everyone, whether you have Olympic aspirations or you just want to get a bit fitter. From group fitness classes to varsity sports, there really is something for everyone.

The group fitness classes include everything from A-Z. Seriously! ‘Aerobics’ (a hardcore, fun-filled class with an equal mix of aerobics, body conditioning and abdominal training) right the way through to ‘Zumba’ (an exciting fusion of interval training and dance influenced steps, including salsa, merengue and samba). Spinning is one of the most popular classes, and the perfect way to sweat off the night before! The sessions range from a 30 minute ‘Xpress Spin’ through to the longer ‘Endurance Spin’ for those looking to spend a bit longer on the bike.

If Rowing1you’re keen to represent BU in a team, then check out the Varsity Sports. There are currently 19 sports with 40 teams, all of which have access to a qualified coach and compete regularly throughout the region. The four focus sports at BU are Cricket, Golf, Tennis and Volleyball so if you’re a pro at any of these then you’re in the right place! SportBU also provides services to some of the other sports which operate under SUBU – including the Rowing Team which I’m involved with!

Of course, it’s also possible to simply get access to the SportBU gym. It’s not long been refurbished and extended, featuring state-of-the-art equipment, a free-weight area and loads of space for stretching, warming up and cooling down.

For those looking for something cheap and cheerful without the need for commitment, then ‘Free Your Fitness’ is just for you. The project, supported by Sport England and trying to increase participation, offers access to various sports either for free or at bargain rates. And if you don’t necessarily see yourself as an athlete, then there are plenty of other opportunities to get involved. SportBU is always looking for volunteers to help deliver various aspects of its programmes and volunteering will help you develop skills and experience which will always be useful later on in life.

SportBU is also able to help with any injuries. Sports Massages are available to be booked (at bargain rates for students) and there’s also access to the experts from the Anglo European College of Chiropractic (AECC) who will offer a free initial appointment to assess your injury/problem.
