Vanessa Susanto

For Vanessa Susanto, pursuing an MSc in Tourism Management at Bournemouth University was not just the beginning of a new journey, but the beginning of the next chapter in one that was already taking shape.

After studying Architecture in Indonesia and spending three years working as a business and management consultant, Vanessa discovered a growing passion for tourism. Her consulting career gave her the opportunity to work on major projects alongside national tourism organisations and destination management stakeholders, sparking her desire to build deeper expertise within the industry.

Determined to turn that passion into a long-term career, Vanessa chose Bournemouth University for its internationally recognised reputation in tourism education and research. She was also drawn to the opportunity to learn from leading academics and gain a deeper understanding of an industry she had become increasingly passionate about.

Her experience at BU proved transformative. Alongside her academic studies, Vanessa embraced a wide range of opportunities to develop her professional skills and gain practical experience. She led volunteers at the International Tourism and Investment Conference (ITIC) UK, completed an internship with the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA), worked as a Student Ambassador, and represented BU at numerous events and initiatives.

These experiences helped Vanessa strengthen her leadership, research, communication, and analytical skills, while also allowing her to build a valuable international network within the tourism industry.

After graduating in 2026, Vanessa returned to Indonesia and secured a position as Assistant Manager of Business Development at PT Kereta Api Pariwisata (Indonesia Railway Tourism). Combining her previous consulting experience with the specialist knowledge gained at BU, she now works at the intersection of tourism, transport, and heritage development.

In her role, Vanessa contributes to creating innovative visitor experiences and supporting the continued growth of Indonesia’s tourism sector — bringing together her diverse experiences to make a meaningful contribution to an industry she is passionate about.

Looking back on her journey, Vanessa credits Bournemouth University with giving her the confidence, knowledge, and international perspective to take the next step in her career and create a positive impact in her home country.

Advice for Future Students

Vanessa’s advice to future students is simple: take risks, trust the process, and believe in your potential.

Stepping outside your comfort zone can feel daunting, but some of the most valuable personal and professional growth happens when you move beyond what feels familiar. Embrace new experiences, invest in yourself, and don’t be afraid of the unknown.

The opportunities you pursue, the friendships you make, and the confidence you develop along the way can shape far more than your career. They can also help you discover your strengths, broaden your perspective, and become the very best version of yourself.
