For Ben Redgell, choosing to study BA (Hons) International Business Studies at Bournemouth University was the start of a journey that would shape both his career and personal development. Drawn to the course’s breadth and flexibility, Ben valued the opportunity to explore different areas of business before specialising in a field that matched his interests and ambitions. Equally important was the university’s strong focus on placements, giving students the chance to gain meaningful industry experience alongside their studies.
Looking back, Ben describes his time at BU as transformative. The course provided a broad understanding of business, allowing him to explore different disciplines and discover where his strengths and passions lay. While some modules confirmed what he did not want to pursue, others came to life during his placement year, when classroom theory became real-world practice. This combination of academic learning and practical experience gave him valuable perspective and helped him develop the skills employers are looking for.
Beyond the classroom, Ben highlights the university experience itself as a defining chapter of his life. From meeting lifelong friends to developing independence and confidence, BU offered an environment where he could challenge himself academically while growing as an individual. Determined to achieve the best possible results, he pushed himself throughout his studies, graduating with skills that would prove invaluable in his future career.
The impact of his degree was immediate. Ben completed his placement year with BD and returned to the organisation after graduating in 2017. What was initially intended to be a short-term role became an exciting long-term career. Over the past decade, he has progressed through a range of positions across digital marketing, social media, and employer branding, ultimately becoming Global Employer Brand and Candidate Attraction Leader.
Ben credits his degree, and particularly the placement experience at BU, with helping him build the commercial awareness, adaptability, communication skills, and confidence needed to thrive in a global organisation. Today, he works across international markets, combining creativity, strategy, and storytelling to connect with people around the world.
Advice for Future Students
Ben’s advice is simple: embrace every opportunity. Seek out mentors, ask questions, build your network, and never be afraid to try something new. Most importantly, if a placement year is available, take it. The experience can enhance your studies, boost your confidence, strengthen your employability, and even lead directly to your future career, just as it did for him.
He also encourages students to embrace emerging technologies, develop strong communication and storytelling skills, and remember that careers are rarely linear. Stay curious, work hard, and remain open to possibility. You never know where your BU journey might take you.
