Bournemouth University graduate Joshua Bosley is celebrating a “once in a lifetime job” after spending two weeks filming with the team behind the world’s fastest hydrogen-powered vehicle.

Joshua, who studied BA (Hons) Television Production at BU between 2012 and 2015, has built a career as a freelance camera operator, director of photography and drone pilot, working across factual, entertainment and branded productions.

Last month he travelled to the famous Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, USA, to help document JCB’s ambitious attempt to set a new hydrogen land speed record. Working as camera operator and drone pilot, he captured the action as the JCB Hydromax team made motorsport history – reaching an FIA-record average speed of 406.320mph across two runs.

Joshua said: “It was a real once in a lifetime job, working in a unique landscape with a great crew. I was pleased to be able to play a part in capturing the record being broken, as well showcasing all the work that goes on behind the scenes.”

The production, which will be released as a branded documentary later in the year, is the latest in a series of successful projects for Joshua, who is also a two-time Royal Television Society Southern Centre Camera Award winner. His other work includes productions for the BBC, Channel 4, ITV, Discovery, Sky History and international broadcasters.

Reflecting on his decision to work as a freelancer after graduating, he said: “Freelancing isn’t for everyone, but it’s something I wanted to do. It requires putting extra effort in, and for me that meant being persistent to secure roles even before I had finished my degree. As well as developing your skills and experiences, it’s a way of building your networks and making contacts that can lead to future work.

“My time at Bournemouth University gave me a strong grounding in both the technical and practical aspects of production, and the confidence to go it alone. Learning how to work with professional camera equipment, understanding storytelling, and gaining hands-on experience on real projects helped build the skills I rely on every day.”
