What’s it all about?
Medical imaging is an essential element of modern medicine and plays a key role in the diagnosis, treatment, and observation of disease. It is a rapidly growing field within healthcare and research as well as industries focused on clinical equipment manufacturing. The clinical and managerial leadership competencies that this course develops are necessary to provide exemplary patient care and ensure overall responsibility for departments in-line with organisational plans. For complex medical imaging and therapy departments to run efficiently, a range of key competencies including knowledge of leadership and management principles as well as technical appreciation of imaging concepts are required.
The aim of this inter-disciplinary MSc in Medical Imaging with Management is to provide you with a systematic understanding of cross-sectional imaging, critical awareness and new insights into essential leadership and people management issues.
The course is delivered by experienced staff from within the Faculty of Health and Social Sciences, Department of Computing and Informatics and The Business School at Bournemouth University.
What’s special about this course?
This MSc is one of the first medical imaging programmes in the UK with key management and leadership components. Thus, you will be studying a uniquely designed cross-faculty medical imaging course that incorporates expertise in organisational management and leadership from BU’s Business School. You’ll also be critically exploring the technical foundations, legal and regulatory frameworks that govern data management systems in addition to latest practices developments in the field of imaging practice. The course provides an in-depth understanding of the concepts that underline the operation of advanced imaging technologies required for clinical practice and research.
Who can apply for the course?
This course is designed to suit the career progression and development of allied health professionals (e.g., Diagnostic Radiographers, Radiotherapists, sonographers), medical physicists, engineers, scientists (e.g., biomedical/medical/biological/physical), psychologists and medical students wishing to intercalate and prepare for a career in radiology. Other healthcare professionals and those with significant clinical and/or industrial experience in the field of medical imaging will also be considered. Appropriate professional qualifications e.g., Diploma of the College of Radiographers will be considered. Further details can be found on the course website.
How will I benefit from the course?
Bournemouth University has recently made significant investments in the medical sciences with the establishment of the Institute of Medical Imaging and Visualisation (IMIV) which sits within the Department of Medical Science & Public Health. You’ll study in a well-resourced environment at our Lansdowne campus in the new Bournemouth Gateway Building with access to facilities (e.g., MRI scanner, Ultrasound machine, Anatomage table etc) for your studies as well as working with experts in the field.
By successfully completing the course, not only will you have a postgraduate qualification but also an in-depth understanding of the concepts that underline the operation of advanced imaging technologies required for clinical practice and research. You can then use this to support the rationale for advanced practice, career progression and/or further study at the doctoral level.
Any funding?
Yes, there is annual funding available from the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) to support postgraduate studies. Some international students may be eligible for the Chevening and Commonwealth Scholarships to undertake this course.
