So you’ve applied to your course, sorted out your finances (hopefully) and accommodation, and you are all ready to make the move to postgraduate education. The only thing left is to actually move to Bournemouth and start your studies, which can be a pretty daunting prospect in itself.

Most of us have already been through halls, student living and first time uni experiences through our undergraduate studies, so the drill may seem fairly familiar, but that doesn’t make it any easier. Moving to a new place and meeting new people can be a nervous time for anybody, so here are a few hints and tips to make it that much easier.

When you are preparing to move in to your new accommodation, make sure you bring some home comforts with you. Whether it be some posters, your favourite pillow, or a dish of your Mum’s lasagne, bringing some of those home comforts can really ease the transition and help you settle in. The first couple of weeks of postgraduate life can be a bit of a whirlwind, you’ll be moving in to your new accommodation, meeting your new course mates, and getting orienteered to the university and your course. So after those first few days you might be glad to have some home cooking in the freezer, even if it is microwaved.

Upon arrival, it’s important to remember that everyone is in the same boat that you are. They’re all nervous about living in a new place and meeting new people. The university usually organises Facebook groups for different postgraduate schools, which can be really useful in arranging social activities. Ranging from University organised gatherings, or just meeting up at the pub, it can make it a lot easier to get to know everyone, so keep an eye out after you have been accepted onto your course!

There are also many BU societies to get involved with. Sport BU offers a wide range of sporting activities including the on-campus gym, fitness classes, football, basketball, netball, badminton and many others, whether you want to play socially or competitively. If you’re a musical soul, Music BU societies include Big Band, Orchestra, Contemporary and Choral Choirs. If you’re an artsy type, the Atrium Art Gallery and Balcony located in Poole house hosts regular exhibitions as well as a weekly lunch-time sessions to meet with like minded individuals.

Or alternatively, just gather up your course mates and head to Dylan’s, the student union run bar, or The Loft, the SU run coffee shop, both found in Poole House.The most important thing is to relax! The first couple of weeks might be busy, but you’ll soon be settled into your new home with some new friends, and (hopefully) getting stuck into your new course!
