Mollie Filgate smilingHi everyone, my name is Mollie and I have recently graduated from Bournemouth University with a 2.1 in BA (Hons) Criminology. I have thoroughly enjoyed my three years at Bournemouth and I’m excited to start this stage of my life and use my degree in various jobs and opportunities.Mollie Filgate and friends smiling, stood outside with buildings behind them

I chose to go to uni and study criminology as it was my favourite lesson in college, and I was interested in learning more about the various aspects of crime and why it is committed. I looked round several universities and chose to come to BU, as I liked the variety of having a campus, but also living in the centre of town. I also loved that the beach was so close, and over the past three years me and my friends have enjoyed going to the beach, even in the winter.

Studying a social science allows you to develop many transactional skills, which can be applied to a large range of jobs in the future. Bournemouth University offer several modules, which in your second and third year you can choose the ones you want to learn, as well as doing a short term or long-term placement, getting yourself into the working environment and receiving education outside of the lecture hall. Personally, I really liked the wide range of options when choosing my modules and the incorporation of other social sciences within the topics, as it allowed me to get the most out of my degree. One of the modules I took in second year was on human trafficking, a crime I knew hardly anything about. I then went on to choose this as the topic for my dissertation and I’m looking into possible anti-trafficking jobs as a future career path.

Looking back over my time at BU, I have made so many friends and great memories. During the last three years, me and my friends have done many nights out, beach days and trips away. We have all enjoyed living together and have all loved our time atMollie Filgate with friends sat on a sofa smiling Bournemouth. It is a bittersweet feeling to leave, as we are all ready to go and start the next chapter, but it is extremely sad to leave this behind. If you’re worried about meeting people and making friends, Bournemouth has many societies that you can join, various sports you can get involved with and many events which will help you meet people.

My time studying criminology has been great, it has been challenging at times, but I feel very accomplished with the work I’ve done over the last three years. I’m very happy I chose criminology as my degree, and would suggest to anyone to choose a social science course, as it teaches you a broad set of skills, allowing you to apply your degree to many career paths.

Overall, I have had a great experience at Bournemouth University, and I wouldn’t change it for the world!
