National Student Pride is the biggest student LGBTQIA+ event in the country! The three day festival in February, hosted by University of Westminster, is made for students and run by student and it is committed to improve the queer student experience nationally! The event features a number of talks, a careers fair and performances which Student Unions may send students too as opposed to an event happening across campuses on a specific day
At Bournemouth, we like to do things a little differently. Organised by SUBU (Students Union Bournemouth University), we run a student pride towards the end of the academic year featuring performances, stalls from LGBTQ+ owned businesses and local charities that work with the LGBTQ+ community, among other things too…
Last year, Bournemouth Student Pride took place on 3rd May in support of SUBU’s LGBTQ+, Trans and Non-Binary Campaign. The event began with a parade through the Arts University Bournemouth Campus then BU’s Talbot Campus where the celebrations continued.
Among the stalls and performances, students were able to truly express themselves by making pronoun badges, getting face paint as well as temporary tattoo’s.
This year, the SUBU full-time officers have decided they would like to focus their energy and resources on running on campus and low-cost/free LGBTQ+ History Month events for LGBTQ+ students, particularly during the cost-of-living crisis.
All students are welcome and there are plenty of ways to get involved, you can simply get involved by just attending, and no doubt there are plenty of freebies!
When this event isn’t running you can still get your pride on with the IRIS LGBT Society who run events all year round with its members. Most recently they had a games night where they played a new version of monopoly!
Student Pride is such great fun every year! And this year will be no different!
