Hello! I am Jaime from Colorado and on the MLit (Hons) English Programme here at BU.

There is more to experience at Bournemouth University than just courses! With over 100 clubs and societies to choose from at BU, you are bound to find some to suit your own interests and hobbies. Plus, if there is a club or society you are interested in that isn’t yet available, you can create one!

Once you are registered as a student, you are welcome to join any club or society at any time. The best way to do this is during any SUBU events, especially the “Freshers Fair” which usually occurs during the first weekend of the term in September at Talbot Campus. The Clubs and Societies have booths and representatives throughout several floors of the SUBU building and most will allow you to sign up right there. Although there can be fees associated with the clubs, most of these are minimal.

If you start in January or are not able to attend the Freshers Fair, you can always join straight from the SUBU website. Once you find a society that interests you, just click Join this Group and you will be directed to more information depending on the activity you choose.

It can be stimulating finding so many interesting and engaging activities, but you also want to be aware of time commitments. I suggest initially limiting your full involvement to maybe three societies! Pick those that are most important for you – you can always join additional societies later on in the term.

In the end, I narrowed my choices down to the Equine Society, the Gamers Society, and Books and Beyond. My friends at BU have joined activities ranging from Climbing Club and the Archaeology Society to the SCUBA club and Harry Potter society!

Whatever your interests, BU has a society for you. Joining a club or society at BU not only adds a new level of enrichment to the university experience, but is a great way to socialise and make new friends.
