Six Bournemouth University teams are to compete at one of the highest levels in University Sport.
After five months of hard work six sportBU Varsity teams have made the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Western Conference Cup finals on Wednesday 18th March.
The leading squads, coming under Bournemouth University’s sportBU banner, include Women’s Badminton 1st, Women’s Lacrosse 2nd, Women’s Football 1st, Netball 1st, Men’s Football 2nd and the Mixed Golf 4th.
The action had already started when the Golf 4th team met Plymouth University’s 2nd’s, which resulted in a solid 4-2 win for BU.
At Bournemouth Sports Club both the Women’s Football and Women’s Lacrosse performed strongly.
Women’s Football beat Southampton 3-1 to secure their place in the finals where they will face a strong Gloucestershire 2nd.
Women’s Lacrosse have had an impeccable season and now have the chance to secure the Western Cup for a second year running after convincingly beating the University of West England 12-3. Star player Alana Zukas, speaking to sportBU, said, “We have had a great season; training isn’t a chore but more of a social occasion for us to get together as friends.”
The Badminton team won 5-3 against University of Winchester to secure their place in the finals while Netball 1st convincingly beat Southampton 2nd’s 55-33.
The final result came from BU’s Men’s 2nd Football team; playing The University of St. Marks & St. Johns they won 3-2, a good outcome for Bournemouth and secured BU’s sixth place in the Conference Cup.
Michael Barry, sportBU Varsity Manager, said, “We are extremely proud of all of our Varsity teams this season who are having such great Cup and Trophy success. It’s a fantastic achievement to have BU dominating the Finals in Exeter and having out of 20 events, 6 teams representing BU.”
