Welcoming Lauren Nygren – USA – to MSc in International Hospitality and Tourism Management

MY JOURNEY TO BU
by Lauren Nygren – USA – MSc International Hospitality and Tourism Management

The Long Haul

When I graduated May 2015 with my undergrad degree so many emotions and worries were going through my head. I had a friend tell me as we were waiting to walk out to our graduation ceremony, “Lauren you don’t look so happy right now.” It wasn’t that I was unhappy, I was just worried about my future.

Flash forward.

It is now August 22nd, 2016 and I couldn’t be happier with the path I’ve chosen to take. I landed a job as an assistant manager for the clothing company Hollister it wasn’t what I expected it to be at ALL but I made many friends there and also learned so much. I traveled to the Philippines, Yosemite, Laguna Beach, Scotland, Disneyland, Malibu and more!

I also was accepted to study at Bournemouth University in September! I will be studying MSc in International Hospitality and Tourism Management. Moving for my MSc probably won’t be what I expect it to be but I’ve always liked surprises.

Official Message on World Tourism Day 27th September 2016 by UNWTO Secretary-General Taleb Rifai:

WATCH THE VIDEO

“Tourism for all!”

Tourism has experienced a revolution in the past 50 years. In 1950 there were 25 million international tourists; today there are around 1.2 billion people travelling the world. Travelling has become a huge part of many lives. When travelling, we come across new people, new sights, and new ideas. Often our perception of the world changes as we see more of it. However, we must not forget that for many, travelling can be quite a difficult process. 15% of the world’s population is estimated to live with some form of disability. That is 1 billion people around the world who may be unable to enjoy the privilege of knowing other cultures, experience nature at its fullest and experience the thrill of embarking on a journey to explore new sights.

Accessibility for all should be at the center of tourism policies and business strategies not only as a human right, but also as a great market opportunity. With the world’s population ageing, all of us will benefit sooner or later from universal accessibility in tourism.  As we celebrate World Tourism Day, let us recall that all of the world’s citizens have the right to experience the incredible diversity this planet has to offer. We thus urge all countries and destinations, as well as the industry, to promote accessibility for all in the physical environment, in transport systems, in public facilities and services and in information and communications channels.

I wish you a very happy World Tourism Day and a future full of enriching and compelling travel experiences to be enjoyed by all.

Dr Taleb Rifai UNWTO Secretary General

News from Vietmam: Phuong Phung graduated in 2010 with a MSc in Tourism Management and Marketing

Phongphoto for BUBournemouth University has left a long lasting impact to my life. I studied on the MSc in Tourism Management & Marketing course and graduated in 2010. After graduation I returned to Vietnam and I am currently working as  a Lecturer in tourism marketing at Hong Bang International University. I am also the co-founder of Sunaca.com and a partner in other projects, including brand consulting for international export.

The MSc degree opened up many opportunities and allowed me to do what I’m doing now. The  course was an extraordinary experience. The course enabled me to gain many insights into marketing, tourism and Information Communicate Technology. All the lecturers are very good, knowledgable, helpful and supportive. But I think it’s the change in mindset that has helped me the most.

During my time at Bournemouth I was involved with many extra-curricular activities while studying, and in particular I helped out with the photography for some seminars and photographs for a charitable event.
I had a great time and learned a lot from the interesting and diverse people that I met. My BU experience was an awesome experience. The school is great, Bournemouth is the ideal place for me. A truly valuable experience.

Recent graduates looking for work should just stay true to your passion and interests, but be prepared to do other kinds of work to survive until you can work in your dream job or business. Networking is important.

Gardens, farms and theme parks see greatest increase in visitors in England in 2015

Results from our latest Annual Attractions Survey show farms, gardens and theme parks reported the biggest growth in visitors with 7% increases for each on last year and wildlife attractions and country parks reporting 4% growth. Of the most visited free attractions, the British Museum again topped the list for the eighth year with 6.8 million visitors, followed closely by the National Gallery with 6 million visitors and the Natural History Museum with 5.3 million visitors. The Tower of London remained the most visited ‘paid for’ attraction with 2.8 million visits followed by Westminster Abbey and Kew Gardens which saw 1.6 million visitors each.  In terms of regional visitor admission trends, the East Midlands, West Midlands and the South West saw the most significant growth across all attractions.

Annual Survey of Visits to Visitor Attractions: Latest results

2015 visitor admission trends

The results from this survey are reported annually, providing an overview of the visitor attraction sector.

The survey is carried out through a mix of online and postal interviewing. This approach means we’re unable to verify results provided by individual attractions beyond a very basic ‘sense check’. Read more about ourmethodology (PDF, 123KB)(link is external).

Survey users should also be aware that the lists of English attractions included in the report only feature those that choose to participate and make their results public.

The Annual Survey of Visits to Visitor Attractions is an official statistic and is produced in adherence with the Code of Practice for Official Statistics (2009). You can find out more about what this means by visiting Official Statistics.

If you have any queries about the survey, get in touch. Results of the survey are published according to our release timetable.
