Said Des Simmons, Chairman of Bournemouth Tourism Management Board (BTMB) and Managing Director of Bournecoast Ltd. “The Bournemouth Tourism Awards were a huge success in 2016 and we need your support to ensure the 2017 awards are better than ever. The forthcoming awards offer the chance for the hotels outside of Bournemouth to enter, so, Christchurch, Poole, Wimborne and other areas in the BH post code can now enter for the first time EVER as we recognise that many visitors come to Bournemouth and help the economy but stay in areas away from the beach or the town.

The awards are there to give businesses and individuals the recognition they so deserve and celebrate those who go the extra mile and offer a world class experience. The awards are for businesses and for individuals and help you to build on YOUR successes. I hope that we will have as much, if not more support for the awards again this year.”

Said Jackie Phillipson Co-Founder of ROUTEpr the company responsible for the awards said, “The Awards are a great chance for businesses to shine. You can be nominated or you can enter yourselves. When you enter the awards it gives you a chance to take a look at your business and showcase your areas of excellence and expertise. Winning or being a finalist delivers great PR and kudos for your staff and suppliers, and showcases your credibility and generates positive PR. The awards are staged thanks to the support of the sponsors and partners, they offer a chance to celebrate in style, as well as develop business opportunities and network. This year, we are delighted to be working with the students, they will give a new purpose and dimension to the awards, as the future of the tourism and hospitality industry.”

The Bournemouth Tourism Awards are now open for nominations and for entries. Take a look at our Gallery for more photos of the evening.

Get involved – the Bournemouth University Global Talent Programme (GTP)

New for the academic year 2016/17, is the Global Talent Programme (GTP). The GTP is about helping students to develop and evidence the attributes they need to succeed in today’s global workplace. The GTP brings together BU’s central extra-curricular employability offer under one banner subsuming the Student Development Award and Post-Graduate Development Award. On this page you will find out a bit more about the programme, what it entails, and how you could help support it.

 BUFoLChina copy

What is the Global Talent Programme (GTP)? This unique programme has been created with employers to help students demonstrate they have the attributes needed to work in a truly global way, crossing physical and cultural boundaries to deliver outstanding results.

How does it work?  The GTP focuses on themes key to the global workplace of the future: global citizenship, collaboration, skills development, research and innovation. These are relevant attributes employers are looking for – regardless of what degree or discipline students are studying. Being part of the GTP involves just a few hours of a student’s time a week when they will work towards achieving a number of badges (dependent on their level of study) and ultimately the Global Talent Award. To gain badges, students will need to engage in a series of lectures and events, undertaking various activities and online challenges. They can also use their interests in all kinds of extra-curricular activities.

Bournemouth University International Conference –

The Visitors’ Economy: Strategies and Innovations

Monday 4th- Wednesday 6th  September 2017  https://goo.gl/ckcuHU

Please email abstracts to: DepTHconference2017@bournemouth.ac.uk

Bournemouth University Department of Tourism and Hospitality is pleased to invite you to

the international conference on The Visitors’ Economy: Strategies and Innovations, organised

in collaboration with our global partners. The conference brings together leading academics

and industry researchers to exchange and share their experiences, knowledge and ideas on

all aspects of the visitors’ economy. In addition to our conference scientific sessions,

we would like to invite you to visit Bournemouth. We look forward to welcoming you.

Conference topic

The visitor economy sector includes all activities which contribute to visitors’ experiences.

At the core are the components of the tourism product, such as accommodation, food,

restaurants, transport and attractions. The concept, however, is much broader as the economy

caters for the needs of visitors and not only tourists. It embraces all activities, infrastructure

and services provided to make each visitor’s experience possible. This is a multi-billion-pound

global sector and to create a successful visitor economy, it is necessary to manage each

individual component of the economy efficiently with a focus on the needs of visitors.

This makes the sector a complex one. Being an ultra-competitive sector, businesses involved

are constantly introducing innovations to maintain their comparative advantages.

These strategies and innovations are used to build resilience into destinations and businesses

to improve their international competitiveness. These may be achieved by implementing

innovations leading to cost reduction, improvement in productivity, improvement in the quality

of product and the creation of new products or better delivery systems.

The themes of this conference will include, but are not limited to:

  • Coastal tourism
  • Creative economy
  • Crisis and disaster management
  • Economy of tourism and hospitality
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Food, nutrition and wellbeing
  • Hospitality management
  • ICT and social media
  • Marketing
  • Policy, planning and development
  • Smart tourism
  • Sports and events

  • Tourism and hospitality education

Food and Drink and Tourism at Bournemouth University

Academics at Bournemouth University and its predecessors have always had an interest in Food and Drink. Today the main focus for this work is the University’s Department of Tourism and Hospitality, with a team of 35 academic staff and over 1,000 undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral students, making it one of the biggest and most prolific departments of its type in the world. Aspects of food and drink are studied in a wide range of contexts.ITT4

Currently Professor Heather Hartwell is leading a pan European project that aims to promote vegetable consumption among adolescents and the elderly. VeggiEAT is an industry-academic partnership led by the University, with European academic and industrial partners. The project is aimed at producing answers, amongst others, to that old question of how we get the kids to eat their greens. Dr Sean Beer is leading research on the authenticity of food. Authenticity is an important idea in that there is often a price premium for products that are labelled authentic; but what does the word authentic mean. Sean’s research with people living in Dorset has produced some surprising answers in a world where so few people actually cook, and eat with their friends and families. Both the Heather and Sean’s work featured in this year’s very successful FoodBIZ conference, which brought together industry and academics to share findings from research and take ideas forward within the areas of food, health and wellbeing.

seanMuch of the University’s food and drink teaching and research takes place within the broader context of the tourism and hospitality industries. Here Bournemouth academics work closely with key academic and industry professional bodies, for example hosting the Annual Hospitality Student Conference in London supported by speakers from companies such as Marriott International, Red Carnation Hotels, the Shangri-La Hotel, the Institute of Hospitality Management, Accor International, InterContinental Hotels and Whitbread Premier Inn. Bournemouth graduates develop the capacity to be involved in the more analytical, developmental and strategic perspectives of the food industries and develop insights into the issues affecting these industries through access to things such as visiting speakers from Hilton International, Fairmont Hotels, Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons and many more.

They are proud of industry collaborations that enable them to cocreate best professional practice through constant interaction and engagement. As Head of Department Professor Dimitrios Buhalis indicated, “We are privileged to work in Bournemouth and Poole, a living tourism and hospitality lab as well as to work with local food companies. This enables our research and teaching to have great relevance and impact in the global marketplace as well as in Dorset and the South West England.”

The University would welcome your involvement, engagement and interaction. Please contact Professor Buhalis (www.bournemouth.ac.uk/tourism).

Annual Coastal Tourism Forum 2016:

nctaShore Potential – Addressing the Coastal Tourism Challenge

Monday 17 October 2016     9.15 – 4.30pm
Church House, Westminster, London
#coastalforum

https://coastaltourismacademy.co.uk/coastal-tourism-forum

This event breaks new ground for everyone involved in the business of coastal tourism. With holidays to the coast the backbone of domestic tourism for decades, the dip in visits in recent years has sounded an alarm bell. However, the tide has started to turn, with seaside holidays up seven per cent last year.

But growth is slower than other UK breaks. There is an urgent need to identify new opportunities to understand the coast’s unique challenges and create a clear direction for the future. At this Forum we’ll be unveiling new research, identifying national trends and highlighting new markets.

We will be sharing our Vision for the Coast but we need your expertise to help shape and deliver it.

Don’t miss this unique opportunity to shape the future direction of coastal tourism nationally, share your expertise and network with the best in the industry.
