19th October 2016 A day with Hon. Dr Peter Long of TUI and Royal Mail

Honorary Dr Peter Long will be visiting us on Wednesday 19th October. He will deliver a lecture from 10.30-11.15 in the Share LT. Peter will speak about and take questions on his outstanding and prominent career in the travel industry and on his role as President of the Family Holiday Association, the leading charity that works to provide opportunities for disadvantaged families to have a holiday. Peter is very keen to speak with our students and he will also contribute to an employability event during his visit. Peter’s audience will primarily be students of tourism and hospitality but this event will also be of interest to colleagues and students of business and management. Please contact me if you will attend and promote Peter’s visit to students.

Peter will also deliver the STEEP ‘Kickstart Day’ introduction from 13.00-14.00 in the Marconi LT

Profile  Peter Long was one of the architects of the 2007 consolidation in European tour operating in which First Choice Holidays merged with TUI Tourism to become one of the largest leisure travel groups in the world. TUI Travel’s businesses range from market-leading sun and beach brands to specialist activity and adventure and online accommodation providers. Post-merger, Peter Long presided over excellent business results in sometimes challenging market conditions. TUI Travel merged with TUI AG on 17th December 2014 to form the TUI Group, the world’s largest tourism company. Peter Long was until recently Joint Chief Executive of the Group and is now Chairman of its Supervisory Board. He was appointed President of the Family Holidays Association in 2013 and Chairman of the Royal Mail in 2015. He received his honorary doctorate from Bournemouth University in 2015.

· 10:30-12:30 (2 hours) SHARE LT – Presentation from Dr Peter Long on his business career, work with the FHA to be followed by questions,
discussion and Tourism Society Group feedback on their ideas for supporting FHA and other planned activities.
· 12:30-13:30 (1 hour) Lunch with BU Tourism Academic Leadership
Discussion to follow on how BU can work more closely and strategically with TUI and the FHA and industry more broadly
· 13.30-14.00 – (30 mins) MARCONI LT – Dr Peter Long to deliver the STEEP Kickstart Day Introduction ‘Employability – tips on making yourself more employable and climbing the career ladder to the top’ and advice to students seeking to enter the industry and secure placements.
· 14:00-14:30 – (30 mins) (D234) – Coffee before for departure with Tourism and Hospitality academic staff
