Nikki Mennen (Netherlands)

Hi! I’m Nikki. I’m originally from the Netherlands and came all the way to Bournemouth to study an MA in Creative Writing and Publishing. After studying at BU for a year, I can truly look back at an amazing experience as a BU student. Let me tell you about my top 5 of all-time favourites things about Bournemouth University.

Open-minded culture

Coming from the Netherlands – one of the most tolerating countries in the world (Yay gay marriage!)  I am used to and always look for a place that is openminded and welcoming. I wasn’t disappointed by BU at all, with its many international students from all kinds of countries, backgrounds, religions, ethnicity and interests. I felt that the overall atmosphere on (and off) campus was inviting and tolerant, I never felt out of place as an international student, a woman, an author or as anything else.

No pressure from exams

I absolutely loved my course (MA Creative Writing and Publishing) and would recommend it to anyone interested in writing or publishing. I was particularly surprised by the practical tone of the courses at BU, I had no exams on my course (woohoo!). Throughout the course we were examined with a combination of assignments, workshops, field trips, feedback sessions, writing exercises, presentations and portfolio’s. After becoming bored with APA references, statistics and exams in the Netherlands for too long, this was such a joyful experience.

Great events and opportunities

I participated in several fun and educational events and opportunities through BU. I earnt a certificate by taking part in the the Global Talent Program, participated in workshops in both yoga and through the photography club.  I went swimming every week with a BU stamp card, enjoyed myself at the Summer Ball, cuddled with guide dogs on campus, learnt some Photoshop skills in a study skills workshop and tried many more things.

Inspiring lecturers

One of the reasons I’m so passionate about my course is that it’s taught by great teachers. My lecturers all had some kind of experience in the field and taught with a fun and passionate approach to their teaching. They gave me feedback on my writing, helped me think out of the box and some even wrote me a reference for my job-search after uni.

Exciting and modern campus

After studying in Nijmegen (one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands) and in Amsterdam and sitting in ancient brick buildings all day, it was so great to see the modern and beautiful Talbot Campus. The Fusion Building was my favourite study spot and I really enjoyed all the facilities that this university has to offer.
