First insight on CareersBU

You have probably heard that student opportunities and employability matter to Bournemouth University, and that’s true! The University offers a lot of help for you when it comes to your employability, future interviews and portfolios. As someone who had a practical insight on this topic, I would like to share my experiences and opinion with you.

“Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.”

The above saying perfectly fits the way BU considers employability. When it comes to advice or help on your career path, the first place you should visit is the Careers Centre. Just on the left side near the entrance to the library.

The Centre offers a careers team, who will give you advice on all aspects of looking for a career in the field you are dreaming of, or assess your CV. However, most of the job is done privately, face-to-face, so you will have to book appointments privately to organize something more specific rather than just general help. For instance, I had to organize an appointment to get more general help with a person who is specializing on IT jobs and, and they evaluated my CV as a programmer.

Apart from that, BU also has the online service MyCareerHub. If you’re interested in employment, you need to make sure that you have visited this website before going to the Careers Centre. The website covers a lot of topics including how to write an effective CV, what services you should use, psychometric tests, events, funding opportunities, current job vacancies, and a lot of other useful information that you should definitely check out. In fact, you can even try an auto-generated mock interview! The website itself is designed in a way that makes it user-friendly and easy to navigate.

It’s worth remembering that even though BU offers extensive help with your employability skills, the one who plays the biggest role in getting your dream job… Is you! The most important factor contributing to whether you will secure a good position are your grades, your experience and your personality, and not the careers service. They are here to help you throughout your career path, not to walk the path for you.
