As Christmas approaches, Student Ambassador Sophia headed into Bournemouth to see what the town centre had to offer to help you get into the festive spirit! 

As the air turns crisp and the possibility of snow dances in the forecast, it’s time to embrace the festive season in all its glory. Gather your friends or date and head to the Bournemouth Christmas Market—or as the Brits lovingly call it, the “Crimbo Market.” 

As a self-proclaimed enthusiast of holiday cheer, you’ll often find me spinning around the ice rink under the twinkling lights. However, I must warn you: the magic of the markets draws quite the crowd. If you’re someone who prefers a quieter experience, I recommend visiting earlier in the day before the lights switch on and the buzz of the evening begins. 

Ready to dive in? Let me guide you through the ultimate way to experience all the market has to offer and soak in the holiday spirit! 

1: Escape to the Alpine Oasis 

Start your journey by immersing yourself in an alpine dream. Treat yourself to a steaming cup of hot cocoa (or an ice cream if you’re brave!) and enjoy the lively tunes of local Dorset musicians. Nestled above Bournemouth Gardens, the cosy Picnic Park Deli café offers the perfect vantage point to take in the charming view of the illuminated Ferris wheel. 

2: Stroll Through a Holiday Wonderland 

As the sun sets and you’re buzzing with joy from your festive treats, take a leisurely stroll through Bournemouth Gardens to admire the dazzling light displays. These enchanting installations remind me of driving through American neighbourhoods as a child, marvelling at the homes adorned with twinkling holiday lights. 

You’ll hear the giggles of children riding the mini train and can walk under the glowing arches of the giant light-up Christmas tree—a moment straight out of a fairy-tale. 

3: Ice Skating Dreams 

Now for my favourite part! Whether you’re an ice princess twirling effortlessly or a clumsy-but-determined Bambi holding onto the rails, the Bournemouth Ice Skating Rink is an absolute must. The rink’s festive vibes are unmatched as you glide to upbeat music. 

Pro tip: Watch out for the experienced skaters showing off their moves in the centre of the rink! But don’t worry, whether you nail your spins or end up sitting on the ice, you’ll leave with laughter, new memories, and a smile. 

Be sure to book your skating session in advance, as popular times can sell out. Afterward, warm up with a mulled wine or hot toddy at the cozy Alpine Bar, where the atmosphere is just as magical. 

4: Feast at the Christmas Market 

With all that skating, you’re bound to work up an appetite. Head over to the Bournemouth Christmas Market, brimming with delectable food stalls and festive treats. Satisfy your sweet tooth with crepes or another round of hot cocoa, or indulge in savoury delights like sausages, pulled pork, or loaded nachos. 

The market also boasts a fantastic selection of gifts, live music, and plenty of photo ops to capture the holiday magic. It’s the perfect spot to support local Dorset businesses while ticking off your Christmas shopping list.
