Open Sesame: Copyright, Creativity and Culture

Tuesday 16 May 2023, 14.00-17.00

Share Lecture Theatre, Talbot Campus, Bournemouth University

This event aims to showcase that there are many ways in which archival content can be unlocked thereby opening doors to new creative material coming into being.

The event hosted by CIPPM and presented in two parts will explore copyright, creativity and culture and the potential of unlocking archives as part of Bournemouth University’s inaugural Festival of Media Production.

Part I: Screening of THE SHADOW LINE

The first part will include a screening of a film produced by Dr Claudy Op den Kamp (Principal Academic in Film) – THE SHADOW LINE – which was made whilst she was a Kluge Fellow at the Library of Congress during January – August 2022. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Dr. Op den Kamp, hosted by Prof. Dinusha Mendis.

The film chronicles the search for the first motion picture that was registered for copyright in the USA. In doing so, Dr. Op den Kamp showcases the opportunities available under copyright law for re-using existing archival material, either because they can be drawn from the public domain or because they fall under copyright exceptions. In this manner, the film is both a reflection of her search for the first motion picture registered for copyright in USA as well as a depiction of the possibilities which are available for creators interested in re-using copyright work.

Part II: Conversations in Copyright, Creativity and Culture

Following on from the screening of the film, the event will move on to a discussion of unlocking the potential of archives with international experts drawn from the fields of film, copyright and archives. The invited speakers will present their ‘open sesame’ response on how they think archives can be opened up more effectively, which will be followed by a broader curated conversation.

The event will conclude with a drinks reception for all those in attendance.
