The state of copyright and AI in the UK and EU: Professor Dinusha Mendis speaks at ALAI Canada

On 26th November 2025, Professor Dinusha Mendis was invited to speak on the current status and developments in relation to AI and copyright in the UK at Association littéraire et artistique internationale (ALAI) Canada.

The panel also consisted of Professor Martin Senftleben (Professor of Intellectual Property Law and Director of the Institute for Information Law (IViR) at the Amsterdam Law School), who spoke about the developments in the EU.

The event was hosted and organised by the current President of ALAI Canada, Francois Le Moine and Professor Ysolde Gendreau (Professor of Law, University of Montreal and ALAI President, 2006-2011).

At present, the UK is at an important juncture: the government proposed a reservation right in December 2024 to deal with the challenges posed by AI technologies, however, there have been no concrete steps taken since then. Charting UK’s response to new technologies including AI from the time of the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 onwards, Professor Mendis outlined the challenges which the UK currently faces, whilst making recommendations for the future of copyright in the UK.
