Suelen Carls

Senior Lecturer in Intellectual Property Law

Suelen Carls is a Senior Lecturer in Intellectual Property Law at Bournemouth University. Before joining BU, between 2018 and 2022, she was a Senior Research Fellow at the Max Planck Institute in Germany. Suelen is a Law Professor at the University of Marília (Unimar) in Brazil and an IP Expert at the World Intellectual Property Organization Academy (WIPO Academy). She has degrees in law and development. Her current research deals with IP & Green Life Sciences, mainly how patents drive sustainable agriculture and food security, IP strategy, internationalisation of companies, and regional integration. She focuses on emerging economies, especially Latin America, and explores how strategic IP frameworks can bolster regional development, cultural preservation, and environmental sustainability. Building on previous work on geographical indications, she investigates the connection between climate resilience and cultural safeguarding.
