Biography:
I completed my undergraduate training at the University of Southampton Medical School in 2012, having also completed an intercalated BSc (Hons) degree at King’s College London in Anatomy & Human Sciences. I went on to complete my Foundation and Core Surgical Training in the West Midlands, on the Stoke & Oswestry rotation. In 2016, I started my specialist training on the Severn rotation based in Bristol. During my training in Bristol, I completed a PGCE in Medical Education at the University of Bristol and was heavily involved as faculty on courses and sat on quality panels for trainees in my deanery. In 2022 I achieved my CCT and went on to start Professor Middleton’s Hip Fellowship in August 2022. I have recently been appointed at the Great Western Hospital in Swindon as a Hip/Knee & Revision Hip Surgeon, starting in August 2023.

Professor Middleton has provided me with excellent clinical fellowship training in hip surgery and has been a great mentor in preparing me for a future career as a consultant.
After a period of supervising and a final sign off to operate independently, you are allocated your own independent lists at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital. You can expect to perform well over 100 total hip replacements over the 12-month fellowship period.
There is good exposure to weekly hip revision surgery on the consultant’s lists and a great opportunity to discuss cases at the regional MDT, plan the cases and perform the cases under supervision or independently, depending on level of experience and progression of skills during the fellowship. You will also observe Professor Middleton performing robotic assisted THR’s at the Nuffield Hospital and gain familiarity with an exciting and evolving area of hip replacement surgery.
Your will join Mike Kent and Kieran Gallagher in their weekly lower limb trauma and hip trauma lists at Poole, to build your experience in managing periprosthetic fracture, but also maintain your general trauma skills. There are also opportunities to perform trauma on your own independent trauma list during the week and at weekends.
You will be given an honorary research fellow position at the Orthopaedic Research Institute (ORI) at Bournemouth University. During my fellowship I was involved in multiple international and national research trials and made use of the virtual reality and arthroscopy simulators in the department. ORI provides a great opportunity to undertake your own research, using the facilities provided in the department.
Poole and Bournemouth boast some beautiful coastlines and has a vibrant social scene. During my fellowship I was able to complete my RYA Day Skippers Certificate and take up a few other water sports.
The hip fellowship at University Hospitals Dorset NHS Trust and the Orthopaedic Research Institute will give you all the training required to perform confidently and safely as a consultant orthopaedic surgeon.
