Prof Ian Swain invited to participate in IFESS expert panel on Functional Electrical Stimulation

Professor Ian Swain – Professor of Clinical Engineering

Prof Ian Swain was recently invited to participate in an IFESS expert panel on Functional Electrical Stimulation. Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) is the application of tiny electrical impulses to restore or enhance function in people with a wide range of neurological or musculoskeletal disabilities.

This can include correction of foot drop following a stroke, restoring hand function after spinal cord injury or improving muscular strength. IFESS is the International Functional Electrical Stimulation Society. As part of their educational activities, they organise a programme of Webinars, free to members but also available to clinicians in the field for a small fee. A recent Webinar on the 28th February 2023, was on Precautions and Contraindications in the use of Electrical Stimulation at the request of the membership.

The webinar lasted 90 mins and was attended live by over 50 people. A panel of four international experts gave short presentations, followed by a question and answer session. Prof Swain was one of these experts; due to his extensive experience in this field and experience in both establishing a clinical service and in the equipment manufacture. The others were Prof Winfried Mayr from Vienna, Dr Ines Bersch-Porada from Switzerland and Dr Gad Alon from Maryland, USA.

A webinar recording is now available to view on the IFESS website.
