ORI Featured in Brochure Showcasing the Great South West

The Orthopaedic Research Institute (ORI) has been recognised as a key part of the South West’s growing innovation ecosystem in the newly launched Great South West Investment Opportunities 2025 brochure — a flagship regional publication designed to attract national and international investors.

Launched by the Great South West Internationalisation Board, the brochure presents a bold vision for the region, highlighting more than £28 billion of investment-ready projects that span clean energy, defence, aerospace, advanced manufacturing, digital media, and health innovation. With an £81 billion economy and over 133,000 businesses, the Great South West is fast emerging as one of the UK’s most dynamic investment destinations.

The proposed Talbot Quarter in Bournemouth is spotlighted as one of the UK’s most exciting regeneration projects, and ORI could be at the heart of this future-focused innovation hub. As part of the wider £350 million development, ORI will continue to drive forward medical science, surgical innovation, and healthcare research.

The brochure highlights ORI’s and Bournemouth University’s contribution to the region’s reputation for health and wellbeing innovation, alongside partners such as Health Sciences University and Arts University Bournemouth. ORI’s commitment to digital health, surgical innovation, and wearable technology’s positions it as a key player in aligning health innovation with sustainable economic development.

Across the Great South West — which includes Dorset, Devon, Somerset, and Cornwall — the brochure showcases:

  • The Agratas Gigafactory in Somerset, producing battery cells at scale
  • The Dorset Clean Energy Super Cluster, advancing offshore wind and hydrogen
  • The Plymouth & South Devon Freeport, supporting marine autonomy and defence
  • The Exeter & East Devon Enterprise Zone, a low-carbon innovation hotspot
  • The Talbot Quarter, a health-tech, MedTech and digital innovation district, featuring ORI

The publication reinforces that the region is home to eight world-class universities, including Bournemouth University, and boasts an innovation ecosystem supported by talent, infrastructure, and world-leading research — with ORI standing as an example of the impactful work underway.

Professor Robert Middleton, Head of the Orthopaedic Research Institute, said:

“We’re proud to see ORI included in this important strategic document. Our work at the intersection of healthcare, technology, and rehabilitation continues to drive improvements in orthopaedic recovery and outcomes. Being part of the proposed Talbot Quarter reflects our ambition to embed research excellence in regional growth and innovation.”
