We’re delighted to announce the publication of a new article, Towards Personalised Nutrition in Major Orthopaedic Surgery: Elements of Care Process, authored by ORI’s Professor Tom Wainwright in collaboration with ORI Visiting Fellow Dr. Matteo Briguglio.
The article, published in Nutrients, explores the integration of personalised nutrition within enhanced recovery pathways for major orthopaedic procedures, such as hip and knee replacements. With the widespread adoption of enhanced recovery protocols standardising perioperative care, the paper highlights the next step in improving patient outcomes—adapting nutritional support to individual patient needs.
The study provides a comprehensive review of the factors that should be considered when personalising nutrition for orthopaedic patients, including body composition, activity levels, disease status, medication interactions, and cultural or socioeconomic factors. The authors propose that tailored nutritional strategies could help further reduce complications, enhance recovery, and support long-term health improvements following surgery.
Professor Tom Wainwright commented: “While enhanced recovery protocols have revolutionised orthopaedic surgery, we recognise that patients are not all the same. Personalised nutrition offers an opportunity to refine and optimise patient care, ensuring that individuals who need it, receive optimised nutritional support before and after surgery. This review brings together key considerations and evidence to help advance the field.”
