Asia Rankings 2017 highlight the rising stars of the global HE landscape

The Asia University 2017 rankings have been announced, which rank Asia’s top 300 universities, which include nations from the Middle East as well.

The National University of Singapore has secured first position for two years in a row now, while rising stars climb the ladder revolutionising the global HE landscape.

The Asia University Rankings used the same 13 performance indicators used in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, however the weightings are recalibrated to reflect the priorities of the region.

For example, the Teaching/Learning Environment indicator weighs as 25% rather than 30%, with the reputation survey percentage totalling 10 rather than 15% of its score.

With the Research indicator, the reputation survey drops 3% in weight with the extra 3% divided between research income and research productivity.

Industry income (knowledge transfer) triples up to weighing 7.5% for the Asia Rankings, which is only 2.5% of the total score for the THE World Rankings.

The results highlight which countries’ investment in higher education and research is paying off, with Malaysia, Indonesia, Pakistan and Thailand championing the table as great future potentials.  With Asian government’s recognising the importance of higher education in fuelling their growing knowledge economy, we will surely continue to see their ongoing  investments in HE while back in the West, governments start to wane in their financial support.

China has proven to be a powerhouse of international research as it shakes the more traditional research institutions in the West.  India has also propelled into the league table by doubling its representation up to 33 institutions in 2017.
