Lord Stern’s Review of REF: Call for Evidence

DailyBUzz-1024x553On the 27th January 2016, BIS launched a call for evidence for its REF review, chaired by the President of the British Academy Lord Stern.  This, of course, comes as the latest of Government’s call for consultation in an effort to make its mark on the HE and research landscape.

The review is to reassess the REF and to explore how quality-related (QR) research funding could be allocated more efficiently, offer greater rewards for excellent research and reduce administrative burdens on institutions (in the Government’s own words).

Currently the REF takes place every 5-6 years.  The most recent REF assessed submissions from 154 institutions under 36 subject categories on a four-point scale by a panel of experts.  While we know that the Government is committed to maintain the dual support system and for the REF to drive QR funding, changes will be made in areas such as REF processes; reporting at a more aggregate level; how the REF is used in institutional decision-making and strategic planning; how to bring more attention to interdisciplinary research; and the impact of REF to individuals in academia.

This is an important opportunity for the academic community to shape policy. Consultation closes on the 24th March 2016 at 11:45pm.
