Meanwhile back in the UK, students yesterday gathered outside Parliament to protest government plans to scrap maintenance grants with loans.  500,000 students will be disadvantaged by this move, which the NUS describes as a ‘lifeline’ for those from poorer families.

A government petition has been opened, Prevent the scrapping of the maintenance grantwhich so far has received over 127,000 signatures.  The topic was debated in Parliament on the 16th January, where MPs voted against the motion to abandon the replacement of grants with loans by 306 to 292.  In five days time, the Government will respond to the petition formally.
