Dr Andreas Lamprakis
Date of Fellowship: May 2010 to August 2011
Current Appointment(s): Orthopaedic Surgeon, Athens, Greece
Biography:
My higher surgical training in Trauma and Orthopaedics was completed in Athens and after passing my exit exams I entered the specialist register in 2009. The same year, the topic of my PhD regarding meniscal suturing was awarded by the Greek College of Orthopaedic Surgeons. In 2009 I joined the Greek army, in order to complete my military service. As a private soldier, I was given the duties of a general Orthopaedic Surgeon in the island of Kos. The following years (2010-2014), I completed successfully a number of fellowships in UK, which greatly enhanced my surgical skills and understanding of the principles and practice of lower and upper limb surgery in the elective and trauma setting. These included an arthroscopic shoulder and knee fellowship in Stoke-on-Trent, a hip and a lower limb fellowship in Bournemouth and a trauma one in Poole Hospital. In addition, I attended a short term four-week AO Trauma Fellowship in Minnesota, USA, regarding complex trauma mainly of the pelvis and acetabulum. Having gained adequate clinical and surgical experience, I have returned to Greece in 2014. Since then I have been working privately in Athens, with main interest in hip, knee, shoulder and trauma surgery.
Comments on time as Prof Middleton (ORI) Fellow:
I very much enjoyed my hip fellowship in Bournemouth under the supervision of Mr Middleton. I was exposed to a wide range of hip procedures, complex and primary, both in the elective and trauma setting. I was given ample opportunity for supervised and independent operating. The trauma, x-ray and clinical meetings have been very helpful and interesting, aiming to educate, improve and self motivate. I have greatly enhanced my surgical and clinical skills in hip surgery, following my hip fellowship, being confident to work privately as a hip surgeon in Greece. Mr Middleton has been a great teacher, and to a great extent, my practice and skills are owed to his unique ideas, approach and efforts!
